Do you ever have that blue feeling at night when the sun goes down,  a whole day has passed and then you think to yourself: ” Shit ! time flies ! I Haven’t done anything right today” . Well that might sounds negative but some people I’ve known seem to experienced the same thing. You spent a whole day running errands, get things done  but at the end of the day you just somehow don’t feel happy and accomplished. I didn’t know the reasons why I usually feel that way. But after reading this book called “The one thing” written by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan, I realized that I was extremely distracted by other things that are not very necessary instead of focusing on my life purpose. Therefore, It always make me stress out and feel a little bit empty sometimes. Well, It’s a bit hard to explain this mental state, I hope you guys get the idea here! This post purpose is to share some tips to focus on your most important, valuable life goal.

‘The one thing’ by Gary Keller & Jay Papasan

So… why is it important to focus on your “one thing”?

When I first picked up this book for its number one best seller advertised on the shelf, I didn’t expected to hate it too much for the first time read it and like it so much that I feel like I have to write a blog post to share with others now.So basically, everything Gary mentioned in this book on how to have a productive and successful life is against what I’ve been doing for years. When I started  College in Sydney, moved away from home for the first time, there’re a lot of things to do in life apart from just getting a degree. Especially for someone like me who had a great childhood and luckily spoiled by my parents before reality hits me … very hard. What I usually do in a daily basic is write a to do list and try very hard to finish the things on the list as fast as possible. I’ve used to mistake that as ‘being productive’. However, I’ve known by now that it’s not the best way to get things done because:

  1. Multitasking is a joke!  I thought that multitasking is a great skill. I used to be very proud of myself for being able to cook, doing my laundry, cleaning my apartment and research on my assessment as the same time. However when you try to handle too many things at once, you end up doing nothing well! This made me extremely distracted from my career goal.
  2. The to do list is not a great tool for productivity. I used to focus too much on being busy and feel so good to tick things off the list. Now I realized that everything that we do is not equally important. It is necessary to figure out what actually matters in the day and put that activity on top of your list. And by doing that, It will feel easier to complete the other things that not on the priority list. For my case, finish a design concept or a documentation drawings for my clients suppose to be the first and most important thing to be done in a day compare to doing the housework.

The key method the authors advised to use is to ask a focus question for your life and the area that matter most in it which is ” What’s the one thing I can do such by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”

These are the example of questions that I asked and answered:

Spiritual life:

What’s the one thing I can do to help others?

Be kind, be helpful and bring positive energy to others.

Physical health:

What’s the one thing I can do to achieve my healthy diet goal?

Be mindful about the food that I eat. 

Personal life:

What’s the one thing I can do to feel more peaceful and relax?

Give myself an hour before bed to relax: reading books, meditate, paint my nails, etc. 

Key relationships:

What’s the one thing I can do to improve my relationship with my partner?

Have a heart to heart talk once a week about our passion, our goal together.

What’s the one thing I can do to make my family stronger?

Have a family vacation once a year.

For job: 

What’s the one thing I can do to further my career?

Develop my personal brand.

Moreover, If you look at it as a larger scale, you’re going to have to plan your one thing  according to several goals from your ‘right now goal’ to ‘ someday goal’. One step at the time to reach to the highest goal. For instance, as a graduate my one thing right now is to look for an interior design job but my someday goal could be forming my own interior design company.

And…  that’s it !!! Those are the things’ve done to refocus my life. I hope that it was helpful for some of you out there if you ever feel a bit uninspired and stressed sometimes. Just a little disclaimer here that those are just my personal thoughts on the book and what I’ve put into practice. There’s no way I can cover everything in one blog post.
